Best spring months

Late March is technically still winter, but the weather has already decided it’s spring. Warm days sitting at 18 to 22 degrees, almond blossoms hitting their peak, wildflowers just emerging across the countryside. You’re still getting off-season pricing on vendors and accommodation. The catch: weather is more variable in March than later in spring. Some rain is possible. If you’re okay with unpredictability in exchange for magic, March is genuinely underrated.

April is the prime spring elopement month, and it deserves the crown. Consistently warm days at 20 to 25 degrees, wildflowers at peak, green landscapes everywhere. Long daylight for whatever timeline you want, and warm-enough evenings to eat dinner outside without shivering. The catches: Easter usually falls in April and gets busy, some cities have Feria (Sevilla’s is legendary but the city is packed), and pricing starts climbing toward summer rates. Plan around Easter and any local Feria, and April is basically perfect.

May is the last real month before peak season locks in. Warm and reliable weather in the 22 to 26 degree range, late wildflowers still holding on, everything still green (browning starts in June). Sunset stretches past 9pm giving you huge daylight. The sea is just starting to warm up for swimming. You’ll pay more than April and weekend availability is genuinely limited (book far ahead). The first real waves of tourists start arriving. But May is one of the two best months of the year for a Costa del Sol elopement.

Early June is transitioning to summer. Weather is warm and stable, days are long, and you get summer atmosphere without the July and August peak crowds. But the green is starting to give way to brown across the countryside, and pricing is essentially summer rates. You need to book well ahead because it’s on the edge of peak season.

Wildflower locations

Andalucia in spring has extraordinary wildflowers.

Sierra de las Nieves delivers mountain wildflowers in April and May: wild lavender, rock roses, Andalusian broom, wild orchids, poppies. Rolling wildflower meadows against distant peaks. Ronda area countryside gives you rolling farmland and hillsides in bloom, with yellow rapeseed fields, red poppies, wild wheat, and almond blossoms (March to April). Yellow-red-green landscape variety in wide open compositions.

El Torcal de Antequera pairs otherworldly limestone rock formations with delicate alpine wildflowers. Coto Donana margins (the national park itself is restricted) give you coastal spring flora in a unique wetland environment.

Coastal wildflowers along Costa del Sol beaches and cliffs include yellow Andalusian gorse, sea daffodils (later season), and wild grasses in flower. All with sea backdrop.

For almond blossoms specifically, March and April are peak. Prime spots: Serrania de Ronda, Alpujarras, the Ronda-Grazalema road, and Sierra de las Nieves valleys. Peak bloom is seven to ten days only, so plan flexibly. For orange blossoms, April and May in Sevilla and Malaga: Sevilla courtyards and streets, Malaga historic centre, and orange grove hillsides. White blossoms with dark green leaves, fragrant, elegant.

Spring locations by type

Beach elopements work well in April and May across Cabopino sand dunes, Playa Rincon de la Victoria, Playa Nagueles, and Estepona beaches. Warm enough for barefoot walking. Empty beaches still. Golden hour extends. Water not yet warm but photogenic.

Mountain elopements in Sierra de las Nieves, Serrania de Ronda, and Sierra Bermeja work best April through early June. Wildflowers everywhere, green everything, cool evenings, dramatic mountain light, empty trails.

Old town elopements in Marbella, Estepona, Sevilla, Ronda, and Malaga historic centres work March through May. Blossoms (almond, orange) in bloom, not yet hot, empty streets before summer tourism, historic architecture with spring greenery.

Countryside elopements in Ronda countryside, Grazalema, and Alpujarras work April to May. Wildflowers and green fields, empty roads, cortijos and haciendas in bloom, perfect light for landscape photography.

Villa and estate elopements with private gardens work April through June. Gardens in bloom, warm outdoor moments, cool for indoor moments, beautiful lighting throughout the day.

Spring light in Andalucia

Spring light in Andalucia is warm but not harsh. This is why it’s often called the best month for photography.

Late March sunset is around 7:30pm, golden hour 6:30 to 7:30pm. April sunset around 8:30pm, golden hour 7:30 to 8:30pm. May sunset around 9:15pm, golden hour 8:15 to 9:15pm. Early June sunset around 9:30pm, golden hour 8:30 to 9:30pm.

Why spring light is exceptional: sun rises softer than summer, long golden hour periods, cool air means clean atmosphere, blue skies frequent, cloud patterns often good, warm side light without heat haze.

Weather realities

Spring weather is generally reliable but has variables.

Spring rain is possible especially April, with a realistic 15 to 25% chance on any given day. Backup planning: indoor ceremony option, villa with covered terrace, flexible timeline.

Spring wind on Costa del Sol beaches is common. Plan sheltered ceremony locations, hair choices resistant to wind, flowing fabrics for movement.

Spring temperature range: days 18 to 26 degrees, evenings 12 to 18 degrees. Bring layers for evening. Sea temperature is cold in spring (17 to 19 degrees). Comfortable to wade, not to swim.
