What Makes Nerja Different

Nerja is a different kind of Costa del Sol. Less developed, more dramatic, and significantly more beautiful for photography than most of the coast west of it.

I’m Justina, a photographer based on the Costa del Sol. I travel to Nerja regularly because the combination of white cliffs, the Balcón de Europa, the small cove beaches below the town, and the Andalusian village character creates backdrops you don’t find anywhere else on the coast.

If you’re visiting Nerja and want photos that look like the Nerja you’re actually experiencing, here’s what that looks like.

Nerja sits at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, where the coastline becomes more dramatic and less built-up. The town is a traditional Andalusian village, whitewashed houses, narrow streets, orange trees, perched above a series of small coves and beaches that the rest of the coast simply doesn’t have.

The cliffs here are the main thing. They make every photo feel like it has scale. The Balcón de Europa, the promenade at the edge of the old town, looks directly over the Mediterranean with nothing between you and the horizon. That kind of openness is surprisingly hard to find on a coast that’s largely flat.

The light also has a specific quality in Nerja. Because the town is elevated and slightly more exposed than the flat coastal plain, the golden hour light hits the cliff faces and buildings at a steeper angle. Warmer in the summer, more dramatic in the autumn.

And Nerja is quieter than Marbella. That’s not a small thing for photography. Fewer tourists in backgrounds means cleaner images. Fewer cars on narrow roads means we can move between locations without losing shooting time. The pace of the town suits the kind of session where the whole point is to slow down and be somewhere.

Best Locations for a Photoshoot in Nerja

Balcón de Europa

The starting point and worth it every time. The curved promenade at the edge of town overlooks the sea from a slight elevation, giving you sky, cliffs, and water in the same frame. At golden hour the light here is extraordinary, the cliff faces glow, the sea turns deep blue and gold, and the sky does something dramatic in autumn especially. It’s busier in peak tourist season so timing matters, but in the evening the crowds thin significantly.

Burriana Beach

Nerja’s largest beach, with the dramatic cliff coastline visible in both directions. Long, relatively uncrowded, beautiful at golden hour when the light hits the water from the west. Good for families who want open space and room to move, and for couples who want a more traditional beach backdrop done well.

The old town streets

Nerja’s whitewashed streets and traditional architecture are quieter and more local than Marbella’s old town. Immediately recognisable as southern Spain, but without the competition for every good corner. The streets around the church are particularly good in the late afternoon, when the light comes in at an angle through the narrow gaps between buildings.

Maro and the cliffs east of Nerja

A few kilometres east, the landscape becomes more wild. Maro is a tiny village above some of the most spectacular coastal cliffs on the entire coast. Less visited, more dramatic, and genuinely extraordinary for couples who want something that looks nothing like a standard beach shoot.

Playa de Maro

Below the Maro cliffs is a protected cove with clear water and rock formations that look more like somewhere in the Aegean than what most people expect from the Costa del Sol. Access is on foot, and genuinely worth it. The combination of the cliffs above, the clear water, and the rock formations creates images that look completely different from anywhere else on the coast.

The viewpoints above Nerja

Several elevated spots around the town give you views along the coast in both directions. From these positions you can see the scale of the coastline, the cliffs stretching east toward Maro, the flat plain west toward Málaga. As a backdrop for portraits, this sense of scale is hard to replicate.

Who I Photograph in Nerja

Holiday couples who came specifically for the natural beauty of the eastern coast and want their photos to reflect that. Nerja draws a specific kind of visitor, one who values something quieter and more real than resort Marbella. The photos should match.

Families visiting for a week or two. The beaches here are calmer and have more space than central Marbella’s busiest stretches. Family sessions at the beach or around the old town, wherever the energy is most natural. The slower pace of Nerja suits family sessions well, there’s less rushing between locations and more room for the session to unfold at the kids’ pace.

Individuals who want something dramatic as a backdrop for portraits. The cliffs and the Balcón de Europa produce images that feel genuinely distinct from anything else on the coast. If you want portraits that look placed somewhere specific rather than somewhere generic, Nerja delivers that.

Elopement couples who want a wild and private setting. The cliff paths toward Maro are extraordinary for an elopement shoot, and the quieter atmosphere of Nerja suits the occasion. An elopement at the Balcón de Europa at golden hour, or on a cliff path above Maro, is one of the most striking photographic experiences available anywhere on the Costa del Sol.

A Note on Travel

Nerja is about 90 minutes from Marbella by car. I factor travel into bookings and since sessions happen at golden hour, the travel generally works without affecting the session. If you’re in Nerja and looking for a photographer, give me a bit of lead time so I can plan the travel around your session timing.

I’m in Nerja regularly throughout the year, it’s not an occasional destination for me. The sessions I do there are scheduled as deliberately as any Marbella session.

What to Expect From a Session in Nerja

After your inquiry, I’ll suggest specific locations based on what you’re looking for and when you’re here. For couples, the Balcón de Europa at golden hour combined with the old town streets is my most consistent recommendation, you get the dramatic coastal backdrop and the intimate village character in the same session.

For families, Burriana Beach at golden hour gives you open space and natural energy that kids respond well to. I can add old town streets if there’s time and interest.

On the day we meet at the location. I do a quick hello and we start moving. No standing still waiting to be posed. Direction through action. The first 10 to 15 minutes are always the warmup, and I build that into every session.

Nerja vs Marbella for a Photoshoot

The question I sometimes get: should we shoot in Nerja or Marbella?

The honest answer: it depends on what you want the photos to look like.

Marbella gives you variety and glamour. The old town, Puerto Banús, the hillside villas, the beach clubs. It’s a diverse location with a strong aesthetic. If you want something that reads as “southern Spain luxury,” Marbella is the answer.

Nerja gives you drama and authenticity. The cliffs, the elevated town, the wild beaches east of Maro. It reads as “southern Spain, the real version”, less polished, more spectacular, more specific to place. If you want photos that couldn’t have been taken anywhere else, Nerja is harder to beat.

Both produce extraordinary images. The difference is the story they tell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge extra for sessions in Nerja?

There may be a small travel supplement for Nerja given the distance from my base in Marbella. I’ll confirm this clearly when you inquire, it’s not significant and it doesn’t apply to all bookings.

What’s the best time of year to shoot in Nerja?

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the strongest months. The light is softer than summer, the crowds are manageable, and the temperatures are comfortable. Summer is busier and hotter but the light is still excellent. Winter is underrated, the cliffs at Nerja in winter light are genuinely dramatic.

Can we shoot at the Nerja Caves?

The caves are an extraordinary location, one of the most spectacular in Spain. Photography inside requires prior arrangement with the site management. It’s not something I handle directly but I can point you toward the right contacts if it’s on your list.

We’re staying in Nerja for a week. When should we book the session?

Golden hour is weather-dependent and I confirm exact timing when you book. I’d suggest booking the session for a day that gives you flexibility to reschedule if needed. Earlier in the week gives more options than the last day.
