Why Mijas Pueblo Is Worth It

Mijas Pueblo sits 430 metres above the coast, perched on a hillside above Fuengirola. Most people drive up for an hour, look at a donkey, and drive back down. The people who stay longer realise they are in one of the most photogenic white villages in Andalusia.

I’m Justina, a photographer based on the Costa del Sol. I shoot in Mijas regularly because the combination of whitewashed walls, terracotta rooftops, panoramic views over the coast, and genuinely narrow streets produces images that look completely different from anything you can get on the beach below.

The light in Mijas at golden hour is extraordinary. Because the village sits elevated and faces west-southwest, the late afternoon sun hits the white walls at a low angle and turns everything warm and glowing. The contrast of the white walls against the deep blue Mediterranean below, visible from almost every viewpoint in the village, creates a backdrop that essentially does the photography work for you.

If you are visiting Mijas and want photos that capture what it actually looks like to be there, here is what that looks like.

Best Locations for a Photoshoot in Mijas

The Main Square (Plaza de la Constitución)

The heart of Mijas Pueblo. Flower pots, whitewashed walls, the small bullring nearby, the church. At golden hour the square is quieter than during the day and the light on the white walls is at its best. The streets leading off the square are narrow and immediately recognisable as a southern Spanish village.

The Viewpoint (Mirador)

The main viewpoint in Mijas looks directly south over the coast, the Mediterranean, and on clear days, the African coastline across the strait. Two people standing at that viewpoint at golden hour with the sea stretching behind them is a photograph that tells a complete story without any further context. One of the best viewpoints I shoot at anywhere on the coast.

The Donkey Steps and Side Streets

Away from the main tourist route, the village has quieter streets that most visitors never find. Stone steps, old doorways, climbing plants on the walls, cats on the corners. These streets produce images that feel genuinely local rather than touristy, even in peak season.

The Church and Flower Lane

The church of the Immaculate Conception sits at one end of the village with a beautiful terrace that looks out over the coast. The lane leading to it, lined with white walls and terracotta pots, is one of the most photographed streets in Mijas for good reason. At golden hour with the light coming through at the right angle it looks extraordinary.

The Balcony Gardens

Mijas is full of balconies decorated with geraniums and climbing plants. The residential streets away from the main tourist area have balconies that create a backdrop of colour and texture that is specific to this kind of Andalusian village and does not exist anywhere on the beach below.

Who I Photograph in Mijas

Couples who want the white village aesthetic. If you have ever seen a photo from Santorini and thought “I want something that looks like that but in Spain,” Mijas is the answer. Same white walls, same dramatic sea views, significantly fewer tourists in your background and much easier logistics.

Families visiting for a day trip. Mijas is a popular day trip from the resorts below. A family session in the village, in the streets around the church or at the viewpoint, produces images that capture where you actually were rather than a generic beach. Kids respond well to the donkeys and the novelty of the village which helps with the energy in photos.

Individuals and couples wanting something genuinely Spanish. The village has a character that the coast below does not. If you want photos that look like Spain rather than photos that look like a beach resort that happens to be in Spain, Mijas Pueblo delivers that distinction immediately.

Elopement couples. The village is a genuinely beautiful setting for a small ceremony or elopement shoot. The church terrace, the viewpoint, the narrow streets. An elopement in Mijas reads as romantic and specific to place in a way that a beach shoot does not always achieve.

Mijas Pueblo vs Mijas Costa: Where to Shoot

Mijas is technically two places. Mijas Pueblo is the white village in the hills. Mijas Costa is the beach resort strip below it.

For photography, the pueblo wins on almost every measure. The variety is greater, the backdrops are more interesting, and the white village aesthetic is what people are actually coming to Mijas to see. Mijas Costa is a stretch of beach that looks similar to many other stretches of beach on this coast.

The one exception: if you specifically want a beach session, Mijas Costa has quieter stretches than Fuengirola and some nice dune areas. But if you are choosing between the two for a couple or portrait session, go up the hill.

Logistics: Getting to Mijas Pueblo

Mijas Pueblo is about 30 minutes from Marbella and 15 minutes from Fuengirola by car. There is a bus from Fuengirola if you are without transport. The village has parking at the edge, though in peak season it fills early in the day. For a golden hour session, arriving at the village around 30 minutes before the shoot time is enough.

I factor travel into bookings from my base in Marbella. No travel supplement applies to Mijas. I will confirm all logistics when you inquire.

What a Mijas Session Looks Like

You inquire with your dates and what you are looking for. I suggest specific locations and a route through the village based on your group and what time of year you are here. For most couples, I start at the viewpoint and work through the village streets toward the church terrace. For families, I tend to start at the church area where there is more open space and move into the narrower streets as the session progresses.

On the day we meet at the village entrance or a specific location. Direction through action throughout: walk this way, turn toward the view, say the thing you were going to say. The first ten to fifteen minutes are always the warmup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mijas far from Marbella or the main resort areas?

About 25 to 35 minutes from Marbella, 15 minutes from Fuengirola, 45 minutes from Nerja. Easily reachable as a day trip from most Costa del Sol accommodation.

What is the best time to visit Mijas for a photoshoot?

Golden hour, specifically the last 90 minutes before sunset. The village is also less crowded in the late afternoon once the day-trippers have left. Spring and autumn are ideal for temperature and light. Summer golden hour is later (around 9pm in July) which means the village is even more peaceful.

Do you charge extra to shoot in Mijas?

No. Mijas falls within my regular shooting area. Confirmed at inquiry stage.

Can we include the donkeys in photos?

The donkeys at the main square can be included. It is a light-hearted addition that some couples and families enjoy. Worth noting that it requires coordination with the owners on the day.

The village looks very busy in photos online. Is it actually crowded?

During the middle of the day in July and August, yes. By 7pm most of the day visitors have left and the village takes on a completely different atmosphere. Golden hour timing is genuinely the solution here.
