What Makes Benalmadena Work for Photography

Benalmadena gets slightly overlooked. Tourists tend to fly into Malaga, spend time in Marbella, maybe visit Nerja. Benalmadena sits quietly in the middle of all of it, and it is genuinely one of the best photography locations on the coast.

I’m Justina, a photographer based on the Costa del Sol. I shoot across the whole coast and Benalmadena is a location I come back to regularly because it gives you three completely different photographic environments in one town. You have the marina, the beach, and the white village perched in the hills above it. Each one produces a completely different kind of image.

The light here follows the same rules as the rest of the Costa del Sol: golden hour is long, warm, and extraordinary. The marina catches the light on the water in a way that creates natural reflections and depth. The pueblo above catches it on the whitewashed walls. The beach gets the full western sunset.

If you are visiting Benalmadena and want photos that actually capture where you were, here is what that looks like.

Best Locations for a Photoshoot in Benalmadena

Puerto Marina

The marina is the most distinctive thing about Benalmadena. The boats, the coloured facades, the reflections on the water, the bridges connecting the different areas. At golden hour the light bounces off the water and the buildings in a way that looks different from anything else on the coast. It is busier in peak season but the marina has enough space and variety that you can always find a corner that works.

Benalmadena Pueblo

Five kilometres up from the coast, the white village of Benalmadena Pueblo is what the whole Costa del Sol used to look like before the resort development arrived. Narrow streets, whitewashed walls, terracotta rooftops, views down the hillside toward the sea. It is quieter than the coast, which makes it better for photography. The streets around the church and the main square are particularly good in the late afternoon when the light comes through at a low angle.

Castillo Bil-Bil

One of the more unusual landmarks on the coast. A Moorish-style castle on the seafront, built in the 1930s, that looks like something from a completely different country. It sits right on the promenade and the combination of the castle architecture, the sea behind it, and the sunset light makes for an image that reads as specifically Benalmadena in a way that nothing else here does.

The Promenade and Beach

The Benalmadena promenade runs for several kilometres along the seafront. At golden hour the western-facing stretch catches the light directly and the wide beach gives you space to move without crowds in your background. Good for families who need room, and for couples who want the open sea as a backdrop.

Tivoli World Area

The area around Tivoli, the amusement park that has been a Benalmadena landmark for decades, has colourful surroundings that work particularly well for portraits. The area is more photogenic than people expect.

Cable Car Viewpoint

The Benalmadena cable car runs up to the mountain above the town and the views from the top are extraordinary. On a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the African coast. For couples who want something genuinely dramatic, this is one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the entire Costa del Sol. Logistics require a bit of planning around the cable car schedule, but the results are worth it.

Castillo de Colomares

Tucked into the hills just outside Benalmádena Pueblo, Castillo de Colomares is one of the most visually detailed and unexpected locations on the coast. It’s not a traditional castle but a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus, built with a mix of architectural styles that somehow work together. Stone textures, arches, staircases, small hidden corners, and intricate details everywhere you look. It gives you layers in your photos without needing much movement.

The light here hits differently depending on where you stand. Late afternoon works best, when the sun drops lower and starts creating depth across the stone. It’s not a wide open space like the beach, so it suits couples or solo shoots more than larger groups. The whole place feels slightly surreal, almost like a film set, but still grounded enough to keep the photos natural.

Who I Photograph in Benalmadena

Couples on holiday who want something to remember the trip by. Benalmadena draws a relaxed, fun crowd, people who chose this part of the coast for the combination of beach, nightlife, and the marina. The photos should match that energy.

Families staying in the area. Benalmadena has a lot of family-friendly accommodation and the beach is calmer than parts of Marbella. Family sessions here work well at golden hour on the beach or in the pueblo, wherever the kids are most comfortable and least likely to be asked to sit still.

Couples who want something nautical. The marina is genuinely unique on this stretch of coast. If you love boats, water, the smell of the sea, and reflections, a marina shoot in Benalmadena is something you will not find anywhere else.

Individuals wanting portraits with a distinctive backdrop. The Castillo Bil-Bil, the pueblo streets, the cable car viewpoint, all of these produce images that are immediately recognisable as somewhere specific rather than a generic beach.

What a Session in Benalmadena Looks Like

You send an inquiry with your dates and what you are looking for. I suggest specific locations based on your group and the time of year. For most couples, I start at the marina at golden hour and move to either the promenade or the pueblo depending on what light is doing. For families, the beach at golden hour is the most consistent option.

On the day we meet at the location. I do a quick hello and we start moving. Direction through action rather than posing. Walk toward the castle, look at the water, do the thing you were going to do anyway. The first ten to fifteen minutes are always the warmup and I build that in.

Benalmadena vs Marbella: Which One for a Photoshoot?

The question I get sometimes: should we shoot in Benalmadena or Marbella?

Marbella has more variety and more glamour. The old town, Puerto Banus, the hillside villas, the beaches. It is the more famous option and the photos reflect that.

Benalmadena has the marina, which Marbella does not. If you want photos that include boats, water reflections, and a nautical feel, Benalmadena wins that comparison immediately. The pueblo above the coast is also more authentic and less touristy than Marbella old town in peak season.

They are not competing options, they are different aesthetics. Choose based on what you want the photos to look like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge extra for sessions in Benalmadena?

Benalmadena is within my regular shooting area on the Costa del Sol. No travel supplement applies. I will confirm this when you inquire.

What is the best time of year to shoot in Benalmadena?

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) give you the best combination of light, temperature, and manageable crowds. Summer is busier but the golden hour is still excellent. Winter is quieter and the light in December and January on the coast is genuinely good for photography.

Can we include the cable car in our session?

Yes, with planning. The cable car has specific operating hours and I factor that into the session timing. Let me know if you want to include it and I will build the logistics around it.

We are here for three days. When should we book?

Book for a day that gives you a backup option in case of unexpected weather. I would suggest not leaving it for your last day. Golden hour timing varies slightly through the year and I confirm the exact time when you book.

How many photos do we get?

Couples sessions: 30 to 60 edited images depending on the package. Family sessions: 40 to 80. Full details on the pricing page.
