Why Maternity Photos on the Costa del Sol Are Worth Doing
This is a specific period of time. It lasts a few months and then it is over, and the person you were during it, in this place, at this point in your life, is gone. A good maternity session does not just document the bump. It captures where you were, what the light looked like, who was with you, and what the whole thing felt like.
I’m Justina, a photographer based on the Costa del Sol. I shoot maternity sessions across the coast and what I love about them here is the setting. The Mediterranean behind you. The golden hour light that this part of Spain does better than almost anywhere in Europe. The warmth in the air, even in winter. Maternity photos taken on the Costa del Sol look different from studio shots or park sessions in northern Europe. They look like somewhere extraordinary, because they are.
If you are expecting and based on the coast, or visiting and wanting to mark the pregnancy with proper photos, here is what that looks like.
Best Locations for a Maternity Shoot on the Costa del Sol
The Beach at Golden Hour
The most consistent choice and for good reason. The open beach at golden hour, with the light coming in low across the water, creates a warmth and softness that is particularly beautiful for pregnancy portraits. The light at this time of day is naturally flattering and requires very little from the photographer beyond positioning correctly. For bare bump shots especially, the combination of warm light and the sea as a backdrop is hard to beat.
The western-facing beaches between Marbella and Estepona catch the full sunset and are my most regular recommendation for this type of session.
Cabopino Dunes
The dunes at Cabopino, about fifteen minutes from Marbella, offer something more textured and wild than a flat beach. The combination of sand, sea pines, and the open water behind creates a backdrop that reads as natural and slightly dramatic rather than resort. For maternity shoots with a more editorial feel, this is one of the best locations on the coast.
Marbella Old Town
For couples who want something more intimate and architectural. The narrow streets and whitewashed walls of Marbella old town create a completely different mood from the beach: warm, close, very specifically Spanish. This works particularly well for bump sessions that include a partner, where the intimacy of the old town setting suits the quieter, more tender moments in the shoot.
Estepona Old Town and Beach
Estepona has a flower mural old town that is one of the most colourful and photogenic settings on the coast. The painted streets provide a completely different backdrop from either the beach or a white village. The Estepona promenade and beach face west and catch golden hour directly.
Nerja and the Eastern Coast
For couples who want something dramatic. The Balcon de Europa, the cliffs, the elevated town overlooking the sea. Maternity photos in Nerja have a scale and drama that the flatter central coast does not have. Worth the 90-minute drive from Marbella for couples who want something genuinely different.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
The ideal window for maternity photography is between 28 and 36 weeks. Before 28 weeks, the bump is often not yet prominent enough to read clearly in photos. After 36 weeks, comfort and mobility become practical concerns.
The sweet spot is 32 to 34 weeks for most people. The bump is clearly visible, you are still comfortable enough to move freely, and there is enough time before the due date that you are not anxious about timing.
Book earlier than you think you need to. Maternity sessions are time-sensitive and photographers’ calendars fill. If you are 20 weeks and reading this, now is a good time to reach out.
What to Wear
The most common question and the one I always give the same answer to: wear what makes you feel like yourself, not what you think maternity photos are supposed to look like.
That said, a few practical notes:
Flowy fabrics photograph beautifully. They move with the light and they do not cling in ways you might not want. A simple maxi dress in a neutral or earthy tone is one of the most consistently photogenic choices.
Avoid busy patterns. Bold prints compete with the backdrop and the bump. Solid colours or subtle textures work better.
Skin-toned or white works well on the coast because it reads against the blue of the sea without creating a colour clash.
Bare bump sessions are an option and many people choose them. If you are considering it, the beach at golden hour is the most flattering setting for this. Mention it at inquiry stage and I will suggest the right location.
For partners: co-ordinate without matching. Similar tones rather than identical colours.
What the Session Actually Looks Like
We meet at the location at golden hour. The session runs 45 to 60 minutes. I do not ask you to pose. I give you things to do and photograph what happens: walk along the water, look at each other, sit down and be quiet for a moment, laugh at something.
The bump is the subject but you are not just a prop for it. The best maternity photos are the ones where the person in them looks completely present in the moment, not like they are standing there being photographed.
If your partner is joining, they are part of the session throughout. If you are shooting alone, the session is built around you solo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my other children to a maternity session?
Yes. Siblings in maternity photos is a lovely thing and I am comfortable working with young children. The session tends to work best if the children are old enough to understand roughly what is happening. Very young toddlers add unpredictability which can work beautifully or can make the session harder to manage, depending on the child. Mention their ages at inquiry stage and I will advise.
Can we shoot indoors if the weather is bad?
The Costa del Sol has very little rain between May and October. If we do hit a genuine weather problem I will work with you to reschedule or find an indoor alternative.
Do I need a planner or can I book directly?
Book directly with me. No planner required for a maternity session.
My partner is not based in Spain. Can they join for the session?
Yes, if they are visiting. Maternity sessions work well as part of a trip where you combine the shoot with a few days away. Let me know the travel context when you inquire.
Is this expensive?
Maternity sessions are priced the same as couples and portrait sessions. Full details on the pricing page. This is a period of time that does not repeat. The investment is worth it.
What if I am self-conscious about how I look right now?
Almost every person I have photographed has said something like this before a session. And almost every person leaves saying the photos were better than they expected. The pregnancy body is genuinely beautiful to photograph. The light does a lot of the work. Trust the process.

Book Your Photoshoot:
Most people who reach out don’t have everything planned.
No exact idea, no clear timeline. Just a feeling that they want something better than the usual photos. That’s enough.
Send an inquiry and we’ll take it from there. No pressure.
For weddings, sooner is better. The good dates go fast. For couples, portraits or last minute ideas… honestly, just ask. If I’m free, we make it happen.
Yes. Marbella, Malaga, all around Costa del Sol… and I travel a lot too. I regularly photograph weddings, couples and portraits across the Costa del Sol, including Malaga. If you’re planning a session there, you can learn more on my Photographer in Malaga page. If you have something in mind somewhere else, send it anyway. I’m probably in.
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do. That’s my job.
We’ll just hang out, move a bit, talk, and it starts to feel normal really fast. Don’t be surprised if you’re already thinking about your next shoot when you see the gallery.
I’ll guide you with locations, timing, outfits, even a bit of relationship advice if you want… didn’t know you booked a photographer and a therapist, huh?
You don’t have to overthink anything 🙂
