What to book alongside your Madeira planner
Once you’ve picked a Madeira planner, they’ll help you with the rest of the vendors. But if you want to lock in the immovable pieces yourself first:
- Venue (book 12 to 24 months out for peak season)
- Photographer (book 12 to 24 months out for peak season)
- Planner (book 12 to 24 months out)
- Celebrant or officiant (book 12 to 18 months out)
- Florist, hair and makeup, band or DJ (book 6 to 9 months out)
If you want a photographer who covers Madeira as a destination trip, send me an inquiry and let’s talk about logistics. I’m a destination photographer, so island weddings outside Spain are on the table.
What to actually ask on a discovery call
When you inquire with a Madeira planner (or any wedding planner), ask real questions. First calls are as much about fit as they are about credentials.
Have you worked at my venue before, or with the format I want (garden, beach, catamaran, mountain)? How many weddings do you take per year? Who will be my day-of contact and what happens if they’re unavailable? What’s included in your service and what’s extra? Can I speak with two or three past couples for references?
Any planner worth booking will answer these directly. If they hedge, keep looking.
Common mistakes when planning a Madeira wedding from abroad
Patterns I see with couples planning any destination wedding from another country, applied to Madeira specifically.
Underestimating travel time. Madeira is a 3 to 4 hour flight from most of Europe, but connections through Lisbon add hours. Give yourself and your guests real travel buffer.
Assuming the weather is uniform across the island. Northern Madeira gets much more rain than southern Madeira. Southern coast around Funchal is drier and warmer. Talk to your planner about which side of the island fits your wedding date.
Not scouting locations. If possible, visit Madeira before your wedding to scout venues in person. If you can’t, video calls with your planner walking through venues on their phone are a decent substitute.
Booking too many locations in one day. Madeira drives are winding and slow. Don’t try to hit a mountain viewpoint and a beach and a garden in one afternoon. Pick two locations max for wedding day photos.
Ignoring the ferry option to Porto Santo. If sandy beaches matter to you, Porto Santo (a smaller island 2 hours by ferry) has proper golden sand and is worth a scout for smaller weddings or day-after portraits.
FAQ
Is Madeira better than Costa del Sol for a wedding?
Different, not better. Madeira wins on nature-forward drama and under-the-radar factor. Costa del Sol wins on flight access, venue variety, and lower cost. Pick based on what your Pinterest board looks like.
Can we legally marry in Madeira as foreigners?
Yes, but paperwork takes 3 to 6 months for foreigners. Most couples do symbolic in Madeira and legal marriage at home. Ask your planner for the specifics.
What’s the best month to marry in Madeira?
April to June or October to November. Warm but not hot, flowers in bloom, quieter tourism.
Do we need to speak Portuguese?
No. English is widely spoken across Madeira, especially in Funchal. Your local planner handles Portuguese-language vendor communication.
How much does a Madeira wedding cost?
Varies widely by scale. Ask your planner for a realistic budget range based on your guest count, venue style, and format.
Do you shoot weddings in Madeira?
Yes. I’m a destination photographer, so Madeira weddings are on the table. Contact me with your date and location if you want a photographer alongside your Madeira planner.
What’s the difference between a garden wedding and a beach wedding on Madeira?
Garden weddings happen in Madeira’s famous botanical gardens or private estate gardens (lush, floral, sheltered). Beach weddings happen on volcanic sand or in coves (wilder, more Atlantic, less classic sunbed vibe).
Is Madeira good for an elopement instead of a wedding?
Yes. The catamaran ceremony format especially works well for elopements. If you’re leaning elopement rather than a full wedding, my elopements page covers what that format looks like.
