I am Justina, a photographer based in Marbella. This post compares both villages honestly and tells you which one fits which kind of couple.
Why These Two Pueblos Are the Underrated Alternatives
When couples ask for a white pueblo elopement, Ronda is the famous answer. Tour buses are the famous problem with Ronda. Mijas and Frigiliana solve the tour bus problem without sacrificing the aesthetic. Both have:
- Whitewashed Andalusian architecture
- Hilltop village position with panoramic views
- Mediterranean visible in the distance
- Authentic Spanish village atmosphere
- Cobblestoned streets with flower-pot walls
- Sunday-paper photogenic quality
Neither has the gorge drama of Ronda, but both have things Ronda does not.
What pueblo blanco means
The term refers to the white villages of southern Spain, mostly in the Cadiz and Malaga provinces. They were originally Moorish settlements that were whitewashed during the Reconquista period. There are about 40 official pueblos blancos in Andalusia. Ronda, Mijas, Casares, Frigiliana, Vejer de la Frontera, Setenil de las Bodegas, and others.
For elopement purposes, the pueblos are not interchangeable. Each has its own character, accessibility, and photogenic quality.
Mijas: Pros, Cons, Best for Which Couple
Where Mijas is
25 minutes inland from Fuengirola, 30 minutes from Marbella. Western Costa del Sol.Easy day trip from any coastal hotel. The closest pueblo blanco to most major Costa del Sol cities.
The look
Classic whitewashed village built into a cliff with panoramic Mediterranean views. Cobblestone streets, flower-pot walls, bullring at the top, narrow alleys, white architecture against blue sea backdrop.
Pros
- Closest pueblo blanco to Marbella. 30 minute drive vs 90 minutes for Ronda.
- Easy day trip from any coastal hotel. No overnight required.
- Photographs beautifully from multiple angles. Hilltop position offers natural viewpoints.
- Solid restaurant scene. Multiple good options for dinner.
- Mass tourism happens 11am-4pm only. Mornings and evenings are quieter.
- Accessible for older guests. Less steep than Frigiliana.
Cons
- More commercialized than Frigiliana or Casares. Visible souvenir shops, donkey taxis, tourist infrastructure.
- The famous donkey taxis are present during tourist hours. Not romantic for photos.
- Some streets have shop fronts and souvenir clutter. You will need to choose angles carefully.
- Smaller “real Spanish life” feel than other pueblos. Mijas has become a tourist destination.
Best for Mijas
- Couples staying in Marbella or Fuengirola wanting minimum driving
- Couples wanting iconic pueblo without the Ronda trek
- Day-trip elopements that do not require overnight stay
- Smaller groups of 2-8 guests
- Couples with older or less mobile family members
- First-time visitors to Andalusia wanting the classic experience
Best Mijas locations for elopement
Plaza de la Constitución at sunrise. Empty of tourists, golden light on white walls. The cleanest shot.
The viewpoint near Plaza de los Siete Caños at sunset. Full Mediterranean view with mountains beyond.
The cliff edge path behind the bullring. Dramatic backdrop, easier to control crowds.
The Saint Sebastian chapel. Small white chapel that works for intimate ceremony.
The streets behind the main church. Old houses with traditional architecture, smaller tourist presence.
Mijas ceremony logistics
Mijas Town Hall handles small wedding requests. Public plaza ceremonies require simple permit (€100-€250). Most foreign couples opt for symbolic ceremony at a private viewpoint or villa. Closest accommodation: Marbella, Fuengirola, or Mijas Pueblo itself (limited hotel options).
Frigiliana: Pros, Cons, Best for Which Couple
Where Frigiliana is
15 minutes inland from Nerja, 1 hour east of Malaga. Eastern Costa del Sol.
Less accessible from Marbella (90 minutes) but closer to Granada and the eastern coast.
The look
Officially voted one of Spain’s most beautiful villages multiple times. Moorish architecture preserved at high quality. Mosaic murals embedded in streets and stairs. Smaller and more authentic feeling than Mijas.
Pros
- More authentic and less commercialized than Mijas. Genuine local life still present.
- Stunning mosaic stair feature is a signature shot. Unique to Frigiliana, photographs beautifully.
- Quieter even during high tourist season. Smaller scale keeps crowd density lower.
- Combines beautifully with a Nerja beach session. 15 minute drive between them.
- The light reflecting off white walls is genuinely different. Atmospheric quality unique to the village.
- Strong restaurant culture for a small village. Local options are excellent.
- Architecture is older. Genuinely Moorish-influenced rather than restored.
Cons
- Further from Marbella (90 minutes by car). Not a quick day trip from western Costa del Sol.
- Smaller vendor ecosystem locally. Florists and stylists usually come from Nerja or Malaga.
- Steeper streets and more stairs. Genuinely challenging for older guests.
- Fewer restaurant options at the level of Marbella. Selection is more limited.
- Limited accommodation in the village itself. Most guests need to stay in Nerja.
Best for Frigiliana
- Couples already eloping in the eastern Costa del Sol or Nerja
- Couples wanting “we found this ourselves” vibe
- Photo-driven couples who want the mosaic stair shot
- Couples doing a multi-village elopement day
- Younger guests who can handle stairs comfortably
- Couples wanting more authentic Spanish village feel
Best Frigiliana locations for elopement
The mosaic stairs (Real Calle Real). Signature Frigiliana shot. Mosaic walls and stairs descending through the village.
The mirador above town. Lookout with view of the sea in the distance.
The small Plaza de la Iglesia. Intimate church square for ceremony.
The streets around Calle Hornos. Whitewashed alleys with flower-pot walls.
The hill above town toward El Fuerte. Higher vantage with panoramic Mediterranean view.
Frigiliana ceremony logistics
Symbolic ceremonies in Frigiliana require minimal permits if held on a private terrace, villa, or hotel. Public locations need town hall permission (less expensive than Ronda).
Closest accommodation: Nerja for hotel options, or villa rentals in Frigiliana itself.

Which One Wins for Your Day
This depends entirely on your priorities.
Pick Mijas if
- Your guests are staying in Marbella, Estepona, or Fuengirola
- You want minimum logistical complexity
- You have older guests or mobility considerations
- You want a quick day-of trip without overnight
- You like classic Andalusian aesthetic without “discovered secret” feel
- You are doing a half-day elopement
- You want easy back-and-forth with the coast
Pick Frigiliana if
- You are already eloping in eastern Costa del Sol or Nerja
- The mosaic stair photo is a must-have
- You like the “we found this place” vibe
- Your guests are mobile and can handle stairs
- You are doing an overnight near Nerja
- You want a more authentic Spanish village feel
- You are combining the elopement with a Granada or Almuñecar trip
Pick neither (pick Ronda or Casares) if
- You want gorge drama or dramatic landscape
- You want pueblo aesthetic AND mountain feel
- You are okay with longer driving for the famous backdrop
- You want the most iconic Spain wedding photos
A Combination Day That Works Well
If you cannot decide between Mijas and Frigiliana and you have a long day, I have done this combination with couples who wanted both:
Morning portraits in Frigiliana (cooler, fewer tourists, mosaic stairs in soft light)
Lunch in Nerja old town with beach view from Balcón de Europa
Drive west, late afternoon arrival in Mijas
Sunset ceremony at Mijas viewpoint
Dinner back in Marbella
It is 3 hours of total driving. Worth it if you want both pueblo aesthetics in your gallery. Not realistic with elderly guests or for couples wanting a relaxed day.
What I would not recommend
Trying to add Ronda to the combination. The 90 minute drive from Frigiliana to Ronda eats too much of the day. Either pick eastern coast (Frigiliana + Nerja) or western (Mijas + Marbella + Estepona). Do not try to do everything.
Other Pueblos Worth Knowing About
Mijas and Frigiliana are not the only pueblo blanco options. Other villages couples occasionally consider:
Vejer de la Frontera
Cadiz province. Hilltop position with views of the Atlantic. Moorish architecture similar to Frigiliana but larger. Further from main tourist areas.
Best for: couples wanting the western Andalusian aesthetic with Atlantic backdrop. Less developed for foreign weddings than Costa del Sol pueblos.
Setenil de las Bodegas
Famous for houses built into the rock face. Surreal aesthetic. About 2 hours from Marbella.
Best for: couples wanting genuinely unusual photos. Logistically challenging for full elopements.
Olvera
Hilltop white village with Moorish castle. About 90 minutes from Marbella.
Best for: couples wanting castle backdrop with pueblo aesthetic. Less accessible than other options.
Conil de la Frontera
Coastal pueblo with white architecture. Different aesthetic from inland villages.
Best for: couples wanting white village vibe combined with beach access.
Why I do not always recommend these
The more famous Costa del Sol pueblos (Mijas, Frigiliana, Casares, Ronda) have established vendor ecosystems and infrastructure for elopements. Lesser-known villages require more legwork from the couple and offer less reliable execution.
For most foreign couples eloping in Andalusia, sticking with Mijas, Frigiliana, Casares, or Ronda makes the day much smoother.
What I Tell Couples in the First Email
If you send me an email asking about Mijas or Frigiliana, the first question I ask is where your guests are staying. That answers 80 percent of the decision.
Guests in Marbella or Fuengirola: Mijas. Guests in Nerja or Almuñecar: Frigiliana. No guests (just the two of you): pick the one whose photos make you stop scrolling on Instagram. If you are doing this just the two of you with no logistical constraints, I usually steer Frigiliana. The photos are more distinctive and the experience feels more like real Spain. Both are good answers. Ronda is the famous answer. Sometimes the famous answer is not the right one for your specific day.
If you want help deciding, send me your rough date, guest count, and where everyone is staying. I will tell you which village fits your specific situation. No sales pitch. The right pueblo is the one where you can have a real day without tour buses ruining your vows. Both Mijas and Frigiliana deliver that. Ronda does not, much of the time.
That is the honest comparison.
