I am Justina, a wedding and elopement photographer based in Marbella. Month choice matters more than couples realize. This post ranks every month for elopement potential in Andalusia and tells you the one month I genuinely try to talk couples out of.
Why Month Choice Matters More Than Couples Realize
Andalusian weather varies dramatically by month. The Pinterest photos that drew you to southern Spain were probably taken in May or September. The August reality looks completely different.
Get the month right and your day is glorious. Get it wrong and your guests are sweating, sunburned, or shivering.
This post is based on real shoots, not weather averages. I have photographed elopements in nearly every month of the year across multiple Andalusian provinces. The opinions are based on actual days, not just statistics.

What this post does not cover
This is not a tourism guide. There are plenty of those. This is specifically about elopement viability month by month from a photographer’s perspective.
The Tier 1 Months: Excellent (Book Early)
May
My personal favorite.
Daytime temperatures: 22 to 27 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 14 to 18 degrees.
Light quality: Golden, soft, with long shadows in late afternoon.
Tourist density: Low for popular locations, increases through the month.
Risk: One rain day per week is realistic. Manageable.
Why May works: spring is fully arrived. Wildflowers in the hills. Beaches uncrowded. Tourist traffic still low. Outdoor everything works. The main reason to book May is the light. Andalusian light in May has a quality I do not see other months. Soft, warm, with just enough humidity to scatter it beautifully.
Best for: couples wanting reliable weather, beautiful light, manageable crowds, and not needing peak summer temperatures.
September
Twin of May but warmer.
Daytime temperatures: 26 to 31 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 18 to 22 degrees.
Light quality: Golden, intense, dramatic.
Tourist density: High in first half, drops in second half.
Risk: Minimal for outdoor ceremonies.
Sea is still warm from summer. Tourist peak has just ended. Light is genuinely cinematic in late September. My second favorite month and one most couples overlook.
Best for: couples wanting warm sea, warm-ish evening air, and most reliable summer-feel weather without August crowds.
October
Cooler than September, warm enough for outdoor ceremonies.
Daytime temperatures: 22 to 27 degrees in first half, 18 to 23 in second half.
Evening temperatures: 14 to 19 degrees.
Light quality: Long golden hours, soft warm tones.
Tourist density: Drops dramatically through the month.
Risk: Slight chance of cooler weather in late October.
Olive harvest atmosphere in the countryside. Restaurants reopen with fall menus. Best for couples who want the “shoulder season” aesthetic but with better weather than Italy in the same month. Best for: couples wanting variety in their photography (warm but not hot weather), fewer tourists, lower prices than peak months.
The Tier 2 Months: Very Good
April
Spring is fully arrived. Comfortable temperatures, occasional rain (less than UK or northern Europe), wildflowers everywhere.
Daytime temperatures: 18 to 23 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 12 to 16 degrees.
Risk: Some risk of late winter weather, especially first two weeks.
Slightly cooler than May. Best for couples wanting maximum wildflowers and dramatic spring light, willing to gamble slightly on weather.
June
Hot but not yet scorching. Long days (sunset around 9:45pm). Sea is warming up.
Daytime temperatures: 27 to 35 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 20 to 26 degrees.
Tourist density: Building through the month.
Solid choice for late-afternoon ceremonies. Best for couples wanting summer feel without August intensity. First two weeks of June are particularly good.
The Tier 3 Months: Workable With Planning
March
Spring is arriving but variable. Some days are gorgeous, some are cool and gray.
Daytime temperatures: 16 to 21 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 9 to 13 degrees.
Sea is still cold. Best for couples wanting to gamble on cheap rates and dramatic landscape lighting.
November
Off-season pricing on hotels and venues. Quiet beaches.
Daytime temperatures: 16 to 21 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 11 to 15 degrees.
Risk of rain: Real but not constant.
Romantic and cinematic when it works. Best for couples who do not mind weather risk in exchange for empty pueblos and dramatic light.
The Tier 4 Months: Difficult But Possible
July
Hot. Often 30 to 35 degrees during the day. Tourist peak.
Outdoor ceremonies must be after 6:30pm. Before that, guests genuinely suffer. Beaches crowded. Vendor prices peak. Restaurants packed. If you must do July, first two weeks are slightly better than second half. Schedule everything around heat avoidance.
December and February
Off-season but with weather risk. Some perfect days happen. Some weeks of cold and rain.
Daytime temperatures: 14 to 19 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 7 to 11 degrees.
Best for couples wanting empty pueblos and dramatic light, willing to gamble. December has the bonus of Christmas atmosphere in Andalusian villages.
January
Cheapest month, quiet, but coldest.
Daytime temperatures: 13 to 18 degrees.
Evening temperatures: 6 to 10 degrees.
Outdoor ceremonies require coat or warm shawl options. Most couples skip January, which means almost no other weddings happening so vendors have full attention.
Best for: budget-driven couples willing to accept cool weather, photographer-driven couples who want the lowest tourist density possible.
The Tier 5 Month: I Will Not Lie
August
This is the month to avoid for most elopements. I will shoot your August elopement if you book me. But I tell every couple honestly: if you have flexibility, do not pick August.
Why August fails
Heat. 32 to 38 degrees most days. Some days hit 40. This is genuinely uncomfortable for an outdoor ceremony. Guests in formal wear suffer. Older guests are at real risk.
Tourist density. Every restaurant is packed. Every beach is full. Hotel prices double or triple. Reservations are impossible without months of advance notice.
Spanish vacation. Spain genuinely shuts down in August. Many of the best restaurants close for vacation. Your favorite hidden venue might be on vacation. Your hair stylist is in the mountains with her family. Vendor availability drops sharply.
Light quality. Hard, bright midday light from 11am to 6pm. Outdoor photos in this window look harsh regardless of photographer skill. The only workable photo windows are sunrise (6am) and after 8pm.
Air quality. Levante wind season can bring dust from North Africa, hazing up the views you traveled for. Photos can come out yellow-tinted from the airborne dust.
Sea conditions. August water is warm but jellyfish season is real. Beach ceremonies need to factor this in.
When August does work
The first week of August can work if you book early and accept the heat. Tourist crowd has not yet hit absolute peak.
Couples doing late-evening ceremonies only. If you want a ceremony at 8pm or later and everything after that, August functions.
Couples staying in shaded villa with pool. If your wedding day involves staying at a high-end villa, daytime cooking by the pool is fine and only the ceremony itself happens in heat.
Couples wanting the Costa del Sol summer vibe with all its noise. If the busy beach club energy is what you want, August delivers it.
The exception within August
The last week of August is the worst week. Tourist density peaks. Spanish vacation closures peak. Heat peaks. Avoid specifically the last seven days of August.
How to Pick If You Have Date Constraints
Most couples have flexibility within a 4-6 week window. Use it.
If you can only do summer
Pick June or first week of July. Skip August. Skip second half of July.
If you can only do shoulder season
Pick May or September. Either is excellent. May has slightly better light, September has warmer sea.
If you can only do off-season
Pick October or April. November as backup. Both produce beautiful photos with different aesthetics (warm autumn vs fresh spring).
If your date is fixed by anniversary, work, or family
Tell me the date in the inquiry. I will tell you honestly what to expect for that specific week and how to plan around any challenges.
If you have complete flexibility
The first weekend of October is the single most consistently good wedding day I shoot all year. Warm enough for outdoor ceremony, cool enough for guests in suits, light is golden, tourists have left, restaurants have reopened. If you have no constraints and no preferences, that is when I would book.
Booking Considerations By Month
When to book how far in advance for each month.
Highest demand months (book 8-12 months ahead)
May, June, September, October. These are the months where good photographers, planners, and venues sell out fastest.
Easier to book (3-6 months ahead)
April, July, November. Some availability but the best vendors will still be booked. Standard tier still has options.
Last-minute possible (1-3 months ahead)
March, December, January, February, August (yes, even August because some couples cancel late). You can sometimes book good vendors here with shorter notice.
Specific month considerations
Mallorca and Ibiza weddings: book even earlier. May venues there fill 12-15 months out.
Granada Alhambra-area weddings: permits and venues require 6-12 months for serious options.
Tarifa weddings: the smaller vendor pool means earlier booking matters more.
Month-Specific Photography Considerations
How light and shooting conditions vary across the year.
April through June
Soft warm light. Long shoulder hours for golden hour shooting. Wildflowers in landscape backgrounds. Manageable shooting conditions all day.
July through August
Hard midday light. Photographer needs to work harder for good results in midday. Pre-dawn and post-sunset windows produce the best work.
September through October
The best photo months overall. Warm light, long golden hours, dramatic atmospheric quality. Olive harvest and changing color add visual interest.
November through March
Variable. Best days produce exceptional dramatic light with long shadows. Worst days are gray and flat. Photographer needs to be flexible and creative.
Specific challenges by month
March-April rain. Plan covered alternative.
June light intensity. Schedule ceremonies after 6pm.
July-August midday. Schedule ceremonies after 7pm. Plan getting-ready photos for indoor air-conditioned space.
November-February cold. Bring coats for between-shot warmth. Plan shorter outdoor sessions
What I Tell Couples Who Are Stuck
If you have flexibility and cannot decide between May and September, pick May. The light is slightly better and the prices are slightly lower.
If you have flexibility and cannot decide between September and October, pick October. The crowds are lower and the dramatic atmosphere is stronger.
If you specifically want the famous Costa del Sol summer aesthetic but want to avoid the worst of August, pick first two weeks of July. You get summer feel without absolute peak chaos.
If you want the most empty, atmospheric, dramatic version of Andalusia, pick second half of November. You will gamble on weather but the upside is exceptional.
If you want to spend the least money, pick first week of December (avoiding Christmas) or last week of January.
What I Want You to Take From This
The biggest single decision in elopement planning after location is timing. Most couples spend weeks deciding on venue and an hour deciding on month. The proportions should be reversed.
The month sets every other variable. Heat. Light. Crowds. Cost. Vendor availability. All flow from when you choose to do this.

For weddings, sooner is better. The good dates go fast.
