What Makes a Headshot Work
Most professional headshots fail for the same reason. The person in them looks like they are being photographed rather than like themselves. The expression is slightly too controlled, the pose is slightly too deliberate, and the result is an image that technically ticks the box of “professional photo” while doing very little to make the viewer actually want to work with that person.
I’m Justina, a photographer based in Marbella. I shoot headshots and personal branding portraits on the Costa del Sol for professionals, entrepreneurs, and personal brands. The brief I hear most often is some version of: “I need something professional but I want it to actually look like me.”
That brief is exactly right. A headshot that does not look like you is worse than no headshot at all. The goal is an image that is polished enough to use professionally and real enough that when someone meets you in person they recognise the person from the photo.
Here is how to get there.
Studio vs Outdoor: Which One Is Right for You
The case for outdoor headshots in Marbella
Marbella has something that most studio environments do not: extraordinary natural light. The golden hour here, the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset, produces light that is warm, directional, and flattering in a way that studio setups try to replicate and rarely match.
Outdoor headshots in Marbella can use the old town as a backdrop (whitewashed walls, warmth, character), the seafront (open, airy, Mediterranean), or a more neutral architectural setting depending on what fits your brand. The result is a professional image that also communicates something about where you are based and the quality of life associated with the Costa del Sol.
For personal brands, consultants, coaches, real estate professionals, and entrepreneurs based in Marbella, outdoor headshots are often the stronger choice. They communicate more than just “I am a professional.” They communicate that you are a specific kind of professional in a specific kind of place.
The case for a cleaner look
If you need images for a corporate directory, a law firm bio page, or a context where a very clean, neutral background is expected, a more controlled setup with a simple background is the right choice. I can provide this in Marbella with portable equipment.
Most people who think they need the corporate clean look actually have more flexibility than they realise. The world has moved. A LinkedIn profile with an outdoor shot in natural light reads as confident and human rather than stiff and generic.
What to Wear for Headshots
The single most important thing to get right before the shoot.
Wear colours that suit you, not colours that are safe. Navy, charcoal, and white are headshot defaults for a reason. They are safe. But if you look best in deep green, burgundy, or terracotta, wear that instead. The goal is that you look like your best self, not like a generic professional.
Solid colours over patterns. Busy patterns compete with your face. They also date faster. A clean colour is easier to work with and holds up longer.
Fit matters more than formality. A well-fitted casual top photographs better than an ill-fitting blazer. Make sure whatever you are wearing fits properly before the shoot.
Bring two or three options. Different looks give you variety in the final gallery. A more formal option and a more relaxed one is a useful combination.
Avoid very shiny fabrics. They catch light in unflattering ways. Matte fabrics photograph better.
How to Prepare for the Session
Get proper sleep the night before. It shows. There is no post-processing fix for looking tired.
Think about your expression, not your smile. The most common mistake in headshots is a smile that has been held so long it no longer looks real. The expressions that work best are the ones between expressions, the look you have when you are genuinely listening to something interesting, when you have just finished laughing, when you are about to say something you mean. I direct toward these throughout the session.
Know roughly what the images are for. LinkedIn, a website bio, speaking engagements, a book jacket, press coverage. Different uses benefit from slightly different styles and it helps me calibrate the session.
Tell me if there is anything you are self-conscious about. I can work around things I know about. I cannot work around things I do not know about.
What a Headshot Session in Marbella Looks Like
We meet at the agreed location. The session starts with a brief conversation about what you need the images for and what you want them to communicate. Then we start shooting.
The direction throughout is through expression and movement rather than rigid posing. I am looking for real moments between the directed shots, the half-second when you are transitioning between expressions, when something I said made you actually laugh, when you momentarily forgot the camera was there. Those are almost always the best frames.
A headshot session runs 45 to 60 minutes. You typically get multiple looks if you brought clothing options. The edit produces 10 to 20 final images depending on the package.

Who Books Headshots in Marbella
The Costa del Sol has a significant concentration of international professionals, entrepreneurs, and remote workers. Real estate agents who need images that stand out in a crowded market. Coaches and consultants who work internationally and need a profile image that communicates confidence and warmth. Business owners who have been using the same photo for five years and know it is holding them back.
Marbella also attracts professionals who are visiting on business or relocating, who need updated professional images and want to get them done somewhere more interesting than their home office.
If you are based on the Costa del Sol or visiting and need professional headshots, the combination of the Marbella setting and natural golden hour light produces something significantly better than a standard studio setup elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many photos do I get?
A standard headshot session produces 10 to 20 final edited images. A personal branding package produces more, typically 30 to 50, and covers a wider range of looks, settings, and expressions.
How long do the photos stay current?
A good headshot stays usable for two to three years if your look has not changed significantly. If you get a significant haircut, change your style substantially, or your professional context changes, it is worth updating sooner.
Can I use the photos commercially (on my website, in paid ads, in press)?
Personal and professional use is included as standard. Commercial use in paid advertising is a different category. Mention your intended use at inquiry stage and I will confirm what applies.
I need headshots urgently. How quickly can you shoot and deliver?
In quieter periods I can sometimes accommodate short-notice bookings. Reach out and I will tell you what is available. Delivery is within 7 to 14 days of the shoot.
Do you offer personal branding packages that go beyond headshots?
Yes. A personal branding session covers more ground: multiple locations, multiple looks, lifestyle shots, working shots, detail images. It is designed to give you a full content library rather than just a profile photo. Ask about personal branding packages at inquiry stage.
Ready to Update Your Professional Photos?
Send me a message with what you need the images for, when you are available, and any questions you have. I will tell you which package fits and whether I am the right photographer for what you are trying to do.
For weddings, sooner is better. The good dates go fast. For couples, portraits or last minute ideas… honestly, just ask. If I’m free, we make it happen.
Yes. Marbella, Malaga, all around Costa del Sol… and I travel a lot too. I regularly photograph weddings, couples and portraits across the Costa del Sol, including Malaga. If you’re planning a session there, you can learn more on my Photographer in Malaga page. If you have something in mind somewhere else, send it anyway. I’m probably in.
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do. That’s my job.
We’ll just hang out, move a bit, talk, and it starts to feel normal really fast. Don’t be surprised if you’re already thinking about your next shoot when you see the gallery.
I’ll guide you with locations, timing, outfits, even a bit of relationship advice if you want… didn’t know you booked a photographer and a therapist, huh?
You don’t have to overthink anything 🙂
