Who Actually Books a Solo Shoot

More people than you would think. And the reasons are more varied than “I want nice photos of myself.”

I’m Justina, a photographer based in Marbella. Solo portrait sessions are some of my favourite sessions to shoot. Here is who actually books them: women in their thirties and forties who are on a trip alone and want to document it properly. People who just went through something significant, a change, an ending, a beginning, and want photos that mark the version of themselves they are right now. Travelers who came to Spain for a week and realised that the iPhone photos they have been taking do not come close to what the place actually looks like. People who want something for their professional profile that does not look like it was taken in a car park.

What all of them have in common is this: they want photos that actually look like them. Not a stiff version of them performing for the camera. Them, in a place that is genuinely beautiful, doing something that feels natural.

That is what a solo photoshoot is.

What a Solo Session in Marbella Looks Like

We meet at the location at golden hour. I do a brief hello and then we start moving. I do not ask you to pose. I give you things to do, walk toward the sea wall, look at the view, sit down on that step, turn around slowly. The camera is running while you are doing those things and the photos happen in the gaps between the direction.

The first ten minutes are the warmest part of every session. Most people feel slightly self-conscious at the start and that is completely normal and built into the process. By twenty minutes in, most people have forgotten the camera is there. The best photos always come after that point.

A solo session runs 30 to 60 minutes depending on the package. You come with yourself. I bring everything else.

Best Locations for a Solo Photoshoot in Marbella

Marbella Old Town

The narrow streets, whitewashed walls, flower pots, wrought iron, bougainvillea overhead. Marbella old town is one of the most photogenic settings on the Costa del Sol and it works exceptionally well for individual portraits because the architecture creates a natural frame around the person. You are the subject and the surroundings tell the story of where you are.

Cabopino Dunes

Wild, textured, with a quality of light at golden hour that looks like nothing else on the coast. The dunes at Cabopino are about fifteen minutes from Marbella town and the combination of the sea, the dunes, and the pine trees creates a backdrop that reads as natural and dramatic rather than touristy. For solo portraits that feel like editorial photography rather than holiday snaps, this is my most consistent recommendation.

Marbella Promenade and Beach

For something simpler and more open. The western-facing stretch of Marbella beach catches the full sunset and the light on the water creates natural warmth and depth. Good if you want something that communicates “I was in this beautiful place” clearly and simply.

Puerto Banus

The marina, the yachts, the architecture. Works well for a more polished aesthetic. The reflections on the water and the scale of the boats create an impressive backdrop without requiring any particular activity from you.

The Hillside Above Marbella

Several viewpoints above the town look back toward the coast with La Concha mountain on one side and the sea on the other. For portraits with scale and drama, the elevated positions above Marbella are some of the best I use anywhere on the coast.

How to Feel Comfortable Shooting Alone

The most common thing I hear before a solo session is “I am not photogenic” or “I hate having my photo taken.” Both of those things are almost never true. They are usually a description of what happens when someone sticks a camera in your face and tells you to smile. That is not what this is.

A few things that genuinely help:

Wear something you feel good in. Not necessarily your most formal outfit. The thing you feel most like yourself in. Colours that you like. Fabric that moves. Something you are not constantly adjusting or thinking about.

Come without an agenda for the photos. The people who come with a very specific idea of how they want to look tend to be less happy with the results than the people who come curious. Trust the process.

Tell me before we start if there is anything you are self-conscious about. I cannot work around something I do not know. If there is something you are not happy to see in photos, say so. I will factor it in to how I am shooting without making a thing of it.

Know that the first ten minutes are the warmup. You are not expected to be relaxed immediately. Neither is anyone else. The session has time built into it for exactly this.

Who This Is For

Solo photoshoots in Marbella are for anyone who wants professional portraits and does not have a partner or group to shoot with. That includes:

People traveling alone. Women treating themselves to something on a significant trip. Professionals who want headshots or LinkedIn portraits that do not look like they were taken against a blank wall. Anyone who wants to mark a moment in their life with proper photos rather than selfies.

You do not need a reason beyond “I want nice photos of myself in a beautiful place.” That is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have never done a photoshoot before. Is that a problem?

No. Most of my clients have never done a professional photoshoot before. I build the session around helping you feel natural rather than assuming you already know how to be photographed.

Do I need to do hair and makeup before?

That is completely up to you. Some people do, some people do not. The photos will look good either way. If you want recommendations for hair and makeup artists in Marbella I can suggest a couple of people I work with.

Can I use the photos for professional purposes like LinkedIn or Instagram?

Yes. Personal use is included as standard. If you need commercial use rights, mention that at inquiry stage and I will confirm what applies.

What if I am plus-size or not a conventional model type?

Every person photographs differently and the job of a good photographer is to figure out what works for you specifically. I am not shooting a type, I am shooting you. The direction, the angles, and the movement are all adjusted to what is working in real time.

How many photos do I get?

For a 30-minute session, typically 15 to 25 edited images. For a 60-minute session, 30 to 50. Full details on the pricing page.

I want to shoot at a specific location. Can I suggest it?

Yes. Tell me your idea at inquiry stage and I will let you know whether it works logistically and what time of day is best for it.
